“The Old Schoolhouse of Boher”

By John O’Brien

The old schoolhouse of Boher,

It stands beside the roadway still

Where one can view the Shannon

And gaze on Keeper Hill

Many years ago they built it

With faith that nought could dim

The men of Boher Parish

When life was tough and grim

And down the years their children

Have come here day by day

Up from Crannagh and Bushfield

Curraghmore and Ballyea

And those who sat within those walls

Have brought the old school fame

Alas – in the Roll books of heaven

One must look for many a name.

And of late a well loved teacher

Has gone to join that class on high

So the spirit of the old school

Lives on in that land beyond the sky
